“Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got / I'm still, I'm still Jenny from the block / used to have a little, now I have a lot”
I thought I would start this blog with a quote. Well, it’s a song lyric really, but I think it perfectly encapsulates the theme of this post.
The lyrics are from the Jennifer Lopez song, ‘Jenny from the Block’. Now, J-Lo (as I believe she likes to be known) is not famed for her insightful lyrics, and is certainly not renowned in marketing circles, but I still think she touched on something important with these words.
What I believe J-Lo was saying here is that to be real, and to be lovable, you have to acknowledge where you came from and show that you’re still true to those roots, no matter how much you may appear to have outgrown them.
Now, I will admit that J-Lo goes on to say a lot more in this song, not all of which I believe is fit to repeat here. She also (I’m told) spends the entire length of the video gyrating in hot pants while heavily adorned in gold jewellery, which I think goes a long way to undermine the song’s message!
However, for some reason, it was the first song that popped into my head earlier this week when a discussion Ben and I were having about Sprint Labs prompted him to show me the company’s first ever website.
Being a relative ‘newbie’ to Sprint it was a fascinating insight into how the company began and I couldn’t help making that noise you make whenever you see something cute and innocent (a puppy for example)!
It made me realise that at the heart of this company has always been two brothers with a dream to do marketing to schools better than anyone else. That was true 7 years ago when they created their first website, and it’s still just as true today several industry firsts later.
It also made me realise that your company is a lot more lovable if it acknowledges its roots and is proud of them. Don’t hide your humble beginnings away under the mattress, be proud of them and wear them like a badge of honour when marketing to schools!
That’s why, as soon as I saw Sprint’s first website, I knew that I had to share it with you. It made me fall even more in love with Sprint and I’m hoping it will do the same for you!
