It’s been over six months now since the government announced what is surely one of the biggest curriculum overhauls of modern times.
I have to admit, I'm a little surprised that more of our clients haven’t focused on these massive changes in their marketing to schools, and I can’t help but think they’re missing out on a huge opportunity.
This autumn will see all state schools in England adopting the new curriculum. Not only are the changes fundamental in nature and ambitious in scope, but schools are also being given a very short time-frame in which to integrate them. Teachers’ unions have even gone so far as to call the timetable ‘completely unrealistic’.
As an example, from September 2014, five year olds will be expected to start tackling fractions and algorithms. Streuth! It’s not surprising that the Prime Minister has described these curriculum changes as nothing short of a ‘revolution in education’.
Now, I remember a few things about revolutions from my time at school; they typically cause widespread uncertainty and fear, are met with a great deal of resistance, and bring about much suffering and stress for the people affected (there is often a lot of bloodshed too but mercifully I don’t think that parallel can be drawn in this instance!).
The point I’m trying to make is that there are thousands of teachers out there for whom this new curriculum represents a pretty serious headache.
Change of any sort can be extremely stressful, but changes on this level… well, it’s got to be up there with planning a wedding! And why do people hire wedding planners? Because sometimes it’s worth spending a few bob in order for someone to take some of the stress out of your hands!
That’s exactly why these curriculum changes represent such a huge opportunity for you when emailing teachers. Focus on the change process and demonstrate clearly to teachers how you can remove some of the stress and pain for them. They will love you for it.
